ECZEMA

What is eczema?

This skin disease is characterized by patches of dry, scaly, and itchy skin. This problem is common in children, although adults can become affected as well. In acute conditions it can be oozy as well

Is eczema curable?

There is not currently a cure for atopic dermatitis. Instead, a skin doctor focuses on helping patients manage the symptoms of this disease through various treatments. Treatment focuses on preventing infections, progression of the symptoms and thickened skin.

What kind of treatment plan is there for eczema?

A dermatologist creates a tailored treatment plan that focuses on each patient’s particular situation and needs. This plan can include a combination approach with a skin care routine and certain changes to lifestyle to help prevent itchy flare-ups and medication to manage the symptoms of a flare-up. Medications are used to lessen swelling, reduce itchiness and lesions, and clear up lesions and infection.

What medications are used for eczema?

A dermatologist could prescribe medications or recommend over-the-counter treatments. These could include topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors. Since the immune system is connected to skin inflammation, a dermatologist may suggest immunosuppressant medication, which could include cyclosporine, methotrexate, or mycophenolate mofetil.
